For years, Samuel Virgo released music under the name Svirgo19. Now, the Sheffield-born musician is putting his own name at the center of his work, a transition reflected in his completed album, “Laughing in the Wilderness.”

The London-based artist has released “Virgo II,” an EP that joins last year’s “Virgo” to form a full-length album examining identity, relationships and personal experiences.

The project represents a shift in how Virgo approaches his music. Rather than working within the expectations of a particular genre, he has brought together elements of indie rock, hip-hop, alternative music and post-punk to create songs shaped by his own experiences.

Virgo also handled the writing, production and engineering himself, maintaining creative control throughout the recording process.

That independence is reflected in the album’s changing musical direction. Some tracks lean toward intimate songwriting, while others use heavier guitars and repetitive arrangements to explore broader subjects.

On “Slip Away,” Virgo examines the emotional consequences of romantic relationships, particularly the uncertainty that comes with losing a sense of oneself.

“I wanted it to feel intimate with the vocals, guitars and understated production. It’s one of the most vulnerable moments on the project overall,” Virgo said.

Another track, “ICU,” moves away from romance to consider how information can be distorted and how people form their understanding of the world.

“I wrote it about the way the world spins narratives, deceives us and hides the truth from us,” he said.

The song uses a more direct, guitar-driven arrangement, departing from the extended storytelling found elsewhere in his music.

The album concludes with “The Word,” one of the earliest songs Virgo wrote for the project. Drawing from indie rock and alternative hip-hop, the track examines the consequences of language and how a single word can alter a situation.

Its musical influences include Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Master Peace and Monster Florence.

Virgo’s approach also reflects a broad range of influences, from Tyler, The Creator and Steve Lacy to Fontaines D.C., The 1975 and Blood Orange. Rather than adopting one sound, he draws from different styles depending on the subject of each song.

His musical career has extended beyond recording. Virgo has headlined performances at The Finsbury and Temple of Art and Music in London and appeared at venues including Camden Assembly, Colours Hoxton and Notting Hill Arts Club.

He has also performed at The Alternative Escape Festival and BARE in Norway.

His work has attracted attention from BBC Introducing Sheffield, COLORSxSTUDIO and several music publications. Virgo also contributed to the soundtrack of the BBC Three series “Boarders.”

The completion of “Laughing in the Wilderness” brings together material from two releases under his real name, following several years of recording as Svirgo19.

For Virgo, the album documents more than a collection of songs. It reflects a period of personal and artistic change, with the musician taking responsibility for both the stories he tells and how they sound.
