Improvement Movement turns modern anxieties into new album

Atlanta experimental rock quartet Improvement Movement is turning the anxieties and contradictions of modern life into an 11-song album and an unusual traveling performance, taking its new record from inside a glass box on the streets of New York to stages across North America this fall.

The band released “Your Perfect Real Life” on Friday through ATO Records, following two years of touring that helped shape a more energetic and darker sound for the group.

Made up of Tony Aparo, Clark Hamilton, Marshall Ruffin and Zach Pyles, Improvement Movement approaches the album as a collective, with all four members contributing vocals and harmonies. The record explores themes including fear, relationships, community and uncertainty.

“We all have a disposition where we’d like to be positive,” the band said.

That outlook contrasts with some of the subjects behind the album. The group said its previous record, 2024’s “Slump,” concentrated more closely on friendships and relationships, while “Your Perfect Real Life” widens its focus to themes of mundanity, futility, fear and acceptance.

The new album also reflects the group’s extensive time on the road. Improvement Movement spent much of the past two years touring and supporting acts including Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Iron & Wine, Houndmouth and Khruangbin.

“It was a gauntlet, trying to live day by day. There was no room for anything with too much premeditation,” the band said.

Rather than approaching the new material primarily as individual songwriters, the musicians said they wanted the recording process to capture more of the interaction they developed while performing together.

“All of us are songwriters before instrumentalists, so we wanted to make this record as instrumentalists,” the band said.

That approach runs through songs including the breakup-inspired “Still Cold,” the more anxious “Carry On” and “Common Place,” which addresses the decline of communal gathering places. “I Do,” a soft-rock track now in rotation on SiriusXM, centers on the line “all we’ve got is a rock and a hill.”

The album closes with “Being Right,” while “21st Century” takes on technology and visions of the future.

Improvement Movement also brought the album outside the recording studio for a companion visual project in New York City. The musicians performed all 11 songs inside a transparent box mounted on the back of a moving truck as it traveled through city streets.

The first installment, featuring “In The Morning,” has been released, with additional videos planned in the coming weeks. The band also plans to release unedited 360-degree footage of each performance.

The project incorporates passing pedestrians, traffic and the changing cityscape into the performances rather than using a fixed backdrop.

The visual series follows earlier videos released for “Common Place,” “Still Cold” and “I Do.” The band also recently recorded an in-studio SiriusXM session expected to air later this year.

The four musicians emerged from Atlanta’s DIY music community, where they spent years around punk, improvisational, no wave and free jazz musicians.

“Atlanta is about as DIY as it gets,” the band said. “We’ve got some of the most killing musicians in the world all spread out on these kinds of islands of urbanization. There’s always something new.”

The group also places an emphasis on shared vocals, viewing singing together as part of its creative process.

“We all have different voices and timbre, and so the music ends up being an amalgamation of our disparate interests and sounds,” the band said.

Improvement Movement is supporting the album with an extensive North American tour running into November. Upcoming stops include Milwaukee on Sept. 17, Toronto on Sept. 20, New York on Oct. 1 and the band’s hometown of Atlanta on Oct. 10.

The tour heads west later in October, with performances scheduled in Phoenix, San Diego and Los Angeles before an Oct. 31 show in San Francisco. Dates in Portland, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha and St. Louis follow in November.

The band is also scheduled to perform on “CBS Saturday Morning” on Sept. 5.

“Your Perfect Real Life” is the follow-up to “Slump” and includes “Still Cold,” “Carry On,” “I Do,” “Common Place,” “In The Morning,” “Wide World,” “Home Again,” “Old Friends,” “Wrong,” “21st Century” and “Being Right.”
