New York City sibling trio BAILEN is entering a new chapter as an independent band, using the single “SWIM!!!” to mark its first self-released music since 2023 and signal a shift toward greater creative freedom.
The song follows the band’s two albums with Fantasy/Concord, “Thrilled to Be Here” in 2019 and “Tired Hearts” in 2023. Along with the single, BAILEN announced the “SWIM!!! At Your Own Risk Tour,” a North American run that includes stops in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Nashville.
The trio said “SWIM!!!” centers on the idea of moving beyond people and situations that create dependence.
“‘SWIM!!!’ is about breaking away from systems and relationships that make you believe you can’t survive without them,” the band said. “It’s the freedom of jumping into the deep end and discovering you can swim. This song is our summer anthem. As we reflect on the past and look to our future, this song embodies the courage and freedom of new beginnings.”
The song’s origins stem from a high-speed hit-and-run crash involving vocalist and guitarist Julia Bailen. The band said she survived the accident with few injuries and was recognized by one of the first responders as a member of BAILEN.
The experience inspired what the band described as a renewed outlook and led Julia Bailen to write the verse that became “SWIM!!!”
BAILEN is made up of siblings Julia Bailen, Daniel Bailen and David Bailen. Raised in New York City by two freelance classical musicians, the trio grew up surrounded by classical music before developing a sound that blends indie rock, folk and pop.
The band’s debut album, “Thrilled to Be Here,” was produced by John Congleton, while Brad Cook produced “Tired Hearts.” According to the band, its catalog has generated more than 50 million streams, and its single “I Was Wrong” reached the top 20 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart. NPR also named “Something Tells Me” one of its Best Songs of 2019.
BAILEN has appeared on “CBS Saturday Morning” and “The Today Show” and has collaborated or toured with artists including Hozier, Amos Lee, Trousdale and The Lone Bellow.
The “SWIM!!! At Your Own Risk Tour” begins Aug. 14 in Seattle and concludes Nov. 21 in Nashville, with performances scheduled across the United States.
