Liverpool trance producer AMOS & RIOT NIGHT is drawing from personal grief and heartbreak on his latest single, “Pieces,” a collaboration with UK producer Grant Trowbridge and singer-songwriter Lucy Starr.

Released on Future Sound of Egypt, the track marks Trowbridge’s debut on the label while AMOS & RIOT NIGHT, the project of producer and DJ David McClelland, returns after years of releasing music through the imprint. The song combines uplifting trance melodies with lyrics centered on resilience and emotional recovery.

McClelland said the song was inspired by one of the most difficult periods of his life, when he lost his grandmother and, days later, the relationship with his partner came to an end.

“In April last year, sadly, my late grandmother passed away,” McClelland said. “The following day, I received a text from my ex-partner saying that he wouldn’t be able to go to her funeral because he had plans that same day and wasn’t willing to compromise to be there for me when I really needed him. I remember speaking with him on the phone that night, feeling deeply upset and angry, if not completely betrayed. So much so that I called him out, calling his actions deeply unforgivable. Days later, everything ended all at once. It felt like I had been hit by a double hammer blow, and my world around me had just crumbled.”

Rather than becoming solely a song about loss, “Pieces” evolved into one about rebuilding. McClelland said writing music helped him process emotions that were difficult to express in words.

“But something beautiful came from the wreckage as I began to rebuild, piece by piece, while exploring those emotions of love, loss and rebuilding. Even now, I’m still learning how to rebuild and start over,” he said.

He added that the timing of the release has given the song added significance.

“Although this song was written in the immediate aftermath of all that happened, less than two months after the worst happened, for the song to be released now, more than a year after it all happened, it feels really poignant in my life,” McClelland said.

The song began with a single lyric that ultimately shaped the entire project.

“The first lyric I came up with was ‘I’m picking up the pieces,’ and I hadn’t even thought of any other melodies or lyrics for it at that point,” he said.

McClelland and Starr developed the song together in Liverpool before bringing Trowbridge into the collaboration to produce the club mix. After additional songwriting and production sessions, the trio completed a track that pairs emotional storytelling with the energetic sound associated with modern trance music.

“When Lucy and I began working on the song, this lyric very much was the focal point of the song and is very much the heart of what this song is all about,” McClelland said.

For the production, McClelland and Trowbridge drew inspiration from the darker, driving style of early Simon Patterson releases while incorporating melodic elements and synthesizer sounds modeled after the Roland JP8000.

“To have worked alongside both Grant and Lucy on this has been a privilege,” McClelland said.

McClelland has spent the past six years releasing music through Future Sound of Egypt, a label he describes as his artistic home. His music has also appeared on labels including Armada, Pure Trance, Vandit and VII, earning support from prominent trance artists such as Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Aly & Fila and Tiësto.

Trowbridge has built a growing reputation within the UK trance scene with releases on labels including Pure Trance, Borderline and Black Hole. Starr, an indie singer-songwriter based in Liverpool, previously collaborated with AMOS & RIOT NIGHT on “Calling Out For You,” which reached No. 10 on Beatport’s Trance Main Floor chart.

With five Beatport Trance Top 10 releases and performances at events including Luminosity Beach Festival, Gatecrasher, Trance Sanctuary and Shine Ibiza, AMOS & RIOT NIGHT continues to expand his presence in the international trance community while using “Pieces” to tell one of his most personal stories yet.
