Hudson, New York-based indie folk project Babehoven will release its third studio album, “I See Them, I See Me,” on Sept. 18 through Double Double Whammy, marking the duo’s first full-length project since singer Maya Bon recovered from a vocal cord injury that temporarily left her unable to sing.

The band, consisting of singer-songwriter Bon and producer and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Albert, announced the album alongside the release of its lead single, “Lasagna,” and an accompanying music video directed by Ash Kron.

The 14-track album arrives after a difficult period for Bon, who experienced paralysis of her right vocal cord during Babehoven’s first headlining tour in 2024.

“For much of the next year, she was unable to sing and was told she might never recover,” according to album materials released Tuesday.

“I have so much gratitude now that I am able to sing again,” Bon said. “To not only sing, but to sing with joy. I think part of the idea of ‘having fun’ with this album is trying to really enjoy what we can do, the gifts we have.”

The album explores what the band describes as a “parallax view,” or different perspectives on the same reality. Bon said the concept emerged from personal experiences and broader concerns about the world around them.

“As things with climate change and the state of the world get more dire and confusing, it’s hard to tell sometimes if what we’re experiencing is reality because it feels so unbelievably grim,” Bon said.

Albert added, “We have a beautiful life, and also we are witnessing catastrophe after catastrophe happen around the world.”

The recording process also marked a departure from the band’s previous work. For the first time, Babehoven collaborated with multiple engineers and recorded in four studios, working with Sam Evian, Kevin Copeland and Phil Weinrobe, who also served as co-producer.

“We wanted to incorporate a fresh, live, honest feel into the recordings,” the band said. “We actively tried to have more fun with making this album.”

Much of the record was tracked live with a six-person ensemble. According to the band, Weinrobe encouraged a recording philosophy of “no playback, no headphones, and no preparation” to capture spontaneous performances.

The lead single, “Lasagna,” reflects themes of intimacy and emotional distance.

“Sometimes when you’re deeply intertwined, you’re so close you can’t really see one another,” Bon said. “You want the other to break in two, to reveal what’s underneath. You keep yourself busy, you fill your day with tasks but the other person is waving in the wind all around you, you feel them everywhere. You feel small, stuck, and frantic all at once.”

Bon also drew inspiration from nine sessions of high-dose ketamine therapy she underwent for depression around the time of her vocal injury. The experience influenced the album’s dreamlike lyrical themes, according to the band.

“I See Them, I See Me” follows Babehoven’s 2024 release, “Water’s Here In You.” The duo is scheduled to perform Oct. 8 at The Avalon Lounge in Catskill, New York.

The album’s track list includes “Lasagna,” “Monster,” “Something True,” “Am I in a Dream” and “Three Reds.”
