For singer-songwriter Liya Shapiro, moving on did not happen all at once.

Instead, it unfolded across years of songwriting, becoming the foundation of her debut EP, “Another Woman,” a collection of songs that traces the emotional aftermath of unrequited love and the person who emerged from it.

The London-based artist released the project as a cohesive narrative built from songs written during different periods of her life. While the tracks were not written chronologically, Shapiro said they are connected by a shared emotional thread.

The EP functions as “something that functions a little like an emotional diary tracing the whole story from beginning to end,” she said.

Though centered on a single experience, the project is less about heartbreak itself and more about how people change as they move through grief, longing and self-discovery.

The title reflects that dual perspective.

On one level, “Another Woman” refers to the woman who entered the life of someone Shapiro once loved. On another, it reflects the transformation she experienced after years of carrying those emotions.

“It’s named after who I became on the other side of it,” she said.

That idea forms the backbone of the record, which Shapiro describes as “a ritual of letting go.”

“I’m genuinely not the same person who wrote these songs anymore,” she said.

The EP opens with a brief strings-led introduction before moving into its title track, which serves as the project’s emotional centerpiece. Shapiro said the song was written in a single sitting after learning that the person she had struggled to move on from had entered a new relationship.

“Watching someone you once loved be with someone else when you never even got the chance … knowing it’s irrational, that you don’t even love them anymore, but feeling it anyway,” she said.

The song combines direct lyricism with chamber rock arrangements, capturing the conflict between rational acceptance and lingering emotional attachment.

From there, the EP turns inward with “Night Thoughts,” a quieter track influenced by French chanson. The song explores what Shapiro describes as “the hour when everything you’ve kept at bay during the day finally comes flooding in.”

At the center of the project is “Hold Me Tight,” a song that bridges two different periods of her life. Shapiro combined verses written roughly seven years ago with a chorus completed much later, creating a dialogue between her past and present selves.

“So it’s two versions of me in the same song – the one still stuck inside the heartbreak and the one who came out the other side,” she said.

The track’s more guitar-driven pop-rock sound mirrors that shift in perspective, moving beyond heartbreak into reflection.

The closing song, “He’s Earthquakes,” takes a more atmospheric approach. Inspired in part by J.M.W. Turner’s storm-filled seascapes, the orchestral track reframes the subject of the record less as a person and more as a lingering force.

“He’s not a wound here so much as a weather system, something that keeps sending ripples through you regardless of how much time has passed,” Shapiro said.

Rather than ending with resolution, the EP closes on uncertainty, reflecting the reality that emotional healing is rarely straightforward.

Shapiro’s creative approach draws from her academic background in art history, fashion and anthropology. She said those disciplines continue to shape her songwriting, visual identity and exploration of human experience.

Since releasing her debut single, “Mirror,” in 2021, Shapiro has built her career independently. Her 2025 single, “Burning Bridges,” became her first track to surpass 50,000 streams, helping expand her audience and leading to a sold-out headline performance at The Troubadour in London.

With “Another Woman,” Shapiro presents her most ambitious project to date, one that documents not only the pain of unrequited love but the gradual process of becoming someone new after it.

The result is a debut record that examines heartbreak from multiple angles while keeping its focus on transformation, memory and the complicated path toward letting go.
