Oklahoma singer-songwriter Ken Pomeroy is turning toward the music that shaped her early artistic identity with “Tonight’s News,” a stripped-down EP built around live-recorded covers and personal reinterpretations of Americana standards.

The project arrives as Pomeroy’s profile continues to rise within the folk and Americana scene following appearances in film and television, extensive touring and growing recognition for her emotionally restrained songwriting style.

Leading the EP is a new version of “Look at Miss Ohio,” originally written by Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. Pomeroy’s interpretation leans into sparse instrumentation and live performance energy rather than polished studio production.

“We recorded this EP in one day in Chicago with Tom Schick,” Pomeroy said. “Every song on it has its own little story as to why we chose to add it to the kind of … interesting collection.”

She added: “Each song was performed live with no overdubbing, with all of us sitting in a weird circle. I hope you all enjoy these songs as much as we enjoyed playing them with each other.”

Unlike many contemporary Americana releases built through layered studio production, “Tonight’s News” centers on immediacy and imperfection, emphasizing live interaction between musicians and preserving the atmosphere of a shared recording session.

The six-track release includes reinterpretations of songs associated with Woody Guthrie, John Denver and Jackson Browne, alongside Pomeroy’s own composition “Bound to Rain,” which previously appeared in the FX series The Lowdown.

The EP was produced by Dakota McDaniel and recorded with Pomeroy’s touring band.

The release also coincides with the one-year anniversary of Pomeroy’s project “Cruel Joke,” which helped establish her as one of the more closely watched younger artists within modern Americana.

At 22, Pomeroy has increasingly attracted attention for blending folk traditions with a quieter, emotionally intimate writing style shaped by both personal storytelling and Native identity.

Teen Vogue previously described her as “a new voice reviving the age-old Native Americana sound.”

Beyond her solo work, Pomeroy has appeared in the film Twisters and contributed music to the Hulu series Reservation Dogs. She has also toured with artists including Iron & Wine and Lukas Nelson.

The broader concept behind “Tonight’s News” reflects a growing movement within Americana toward preserving the intimacy of live musicianship at a time when digital perfection often dominates production.

For Pomeroy, the EP functions less as a reinvention than as a document of influence, tracing the songs and sounds that helped shape her approach to storytelling and performance.
