London-based duo Joel X Eleanor are using a two-song release to examine the contradictions of modern romance, pairing intimacy with unease in their latest project “Garden Plot / Something Strange.”

The double single presents two contrasting perspectives on love, with each track exploring a different emotional register. “Garden Plot” begins with a romantic premise before shifting into darker territory, while “Something Strange” leans into vulnerability and the quiet adjustments of sharing a life with someone else.

The release reflects the duo’s collaborative dynamic. Joel handles production, instrumentation and recording, while Eleanor shapes the lyrical direction and vocal delivery, creating a balance between technical precision and emotional storytelling.

“Garden Plot” originated from a simple idea. Eleanor wrote the lyrics after Joel asked her for flowers, imagining a lasting alternative to a traditional bouquet.

But the song evolved beyond its initial concept. Joel’s production reframes the gesture, turning domestic imagery into something more tense and obsessive. The track was recorded across multiple locations, including a family home in Birkenhead and a rented space in Derby, where improvised elements such as a small aluminum Christmas tree were used as percussion.

The song also incorporates a nod to Eleanor’s Hungarian background, referencing a line from a poem by Attila József that translates to: “Bite me, bite me – or I’ll bite you!”

In contrast, “Something Strange” focuses on the quieter side of connection. Written largely by Joel, the track captures the shift from solitude to companionship, exploring the subtle changes that come with letting someone into everyday life.

Together, the songs highlight the duo’s broader approach to songwriting, where contrasting emotional tones are used to build a fuller picture of relationships.

Joel X Eleanor first gained attention in London’s underground scene between 2022 and 2025 as the band Sweet Anna before reintroducing themselves under a new name. The current project emphasizes their creative partnership and a more defined artistic identity.

Both artists, who describe themselves as detail-driven, approach songwriting with a focus on precision, where each element of a track is intentionally placed.

Their sound blends guitar-driven arrangements with layered synths and vocal harmonies, drawing from alternative rock influences while incorporating elements of jazz and contemporary production. The tracks were mixed and mastered by Julie Bartley at Rolling Audio in Newcastle.

The release comes as independent artists increasingly experiment with format and storytelling, using shorter projects like double singles to present cohesive ideas without the scale of a full album.

For Joel X Eleanor, “Garden Plot / Something Strange” serves less as a traditional release and more as a study in contrast, using two songs to explore how love can feel both consuming and comforting at the same time.

The duo is scheduled to perform live in June in Canterbury and again in September at Spectrum Festival in Matlock.
