Chantal Kreviazuk is revisiting her own songwriting catalog ahead of a new album, releasing a reimagined version of “Walk Away,” a track she originally co-wrote and was recorded by Kelly Clarkson.

The single, released Friday via Wax Records, offers a preview of Kreviazuk’s upcoming album “In My Own Voice,” due May 22. The project centers on songs she helped write for other artists, now performed from her own perspective.

“I remember being in the studio with Kelly, and she delivered the vocal in one take. It was undeniable,” Kreviazuk shares. “We ended up asking her to sing it again, not because we needed it, but because we just wanted to hear her sing it one more time.”

Originally released in 2004, “Walk Away” became one of Clarkson’s defining tracks, known for its message of independence. Kreviazuk’s version shifts the tone, moving away from the original’s high-energy production and toward a slower, piano-driven arrangement that emphasizes reflection and restraint.

The release highlights a broader trend of songwriters reclaiming their work, particularly as streaming and social media introduce older songs to new audiences. Kreviazuk said the idea for the album was partly sparked by renewed interest in her earlier material, including tracks like “Over My Dead Body” and “Feel This Moment.”

With “In My Own Voice,” she brings together songs tied to some of the biggest names in pop and hip-hop. Over the years, Kreviazuk has contributed to projects by artists including Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Pitbull and Christina Aguilera, building a career that extends well beyond her own recordings.

The album’s concept reflects a shift from behind-the-scenes collaboration to personal reinterpretation. By revisiting these songs, Kreviazuk is reframing work that has often been associated with other voices.

The release of “Walk Away” comes as she continues a U.S. tour, performing the reworked material in smaller, more intimate settings. The live shows mirror the album’s tone, focusing on stripped-down arrangements and storytelling.

Kreviazuk has accumulated hundreds of millions of streams across her catalog and remains a prominent figure in Canadian music, with multiple JUNO Awards and a Grammy recognition. Her songs have appeared in films and television series for more than two decades.

As “In My Own Voice” approaches its release, the project underscores how established songwriters are reintroducing their work in new formats, offering audiences a different perspective on songs that were originally shaped for other artists.
