Talking Violet finds new depth in ‘In Your Mind’

Talking Violet’s latest single, “In Your Mind,” is both shimmering and heavy, a track that moves with an upbeat pulse while carrying the weight of emotional uncertainty. For lead vocalist and guitarist Jillian Goyeau, that tension is exactly what gives the song its honesty.

“It’s not something I have thought about intentionally too much,” Goyeau said when asked about balancing brightness and heaviness. “But I’ve always felt more authentic in using writing to ‘work through things,’ for lack of a better expression. Due to that, I think it’s the things I find challenging or confusing that I tend to write about. Sonically though, I definitely gravitate toward glittery stuff sometimes. I like combining those two worlds.”

The Windsor, Ontario four-piece – Goyeau, Jayden Turnbull on guitar and vocals, Jeremie Brousseau on drums and Dylan Iannicello on bass – has spent the last few years carving out its own corner in the shoegaze and indie scene. They call their sound “dreamo,” a blend of shoegaze haze, dream-pop gloss and emo-leaning lyricism.

“We have always been in the shoegaze community, or at least for a very long while,” Goyeau explained. “And subgenres always come up, of course. Dream-pop, indie even, etc. One of my fav artists, Julien Baker, was once described as an indie-emo, which I loved at the time because I felt it spoke to her really emotionally detailed lyrics. Dreamo kinda just came up recently. Our friend called us that, and I was like wow. I love that hahaha.”

“In Your Mind” arrived in a rush. Goyeau said the song was written almost instantly after a difficult personal moment.

“I wrote ‘In Your Mind’ literally hours after going through a really tough conversation,” she said. “Probably the most immediate songwriting I’ve ever done. It’s just all I could think about while I was in the studio.”

The song’s hook – “I wonder if I echo in your mind?” – captures the uncertainty of holding space in someone else’s world. That line, too, came in a burst.

“‘In Your Mind’ was written all in one sitting after a really hard conversation with someone I really, really love,” she said. “It came from worry, really.”

The track continues the thread the band wove through its recent album “Everything At Once.” That record dug into the grief of relationships changing and the strain of learning to let go.

“I feel like it connects to tension felt in the stories from that album,” Goyeau said. “There’s a huge overarching theme of creating a healthy distance between myself and some challenges, even when it is really hard to do so.”

She added that the process of writing mirrored her personal growth.

“Honestly, writing these songs is kind of what had me come to that conclusion,” Goyeau said. “I think I was just having big feelings for a really long time and didn’t know what they were speaking to deep down within me. Writing the songs helped me through it. Releasing them kinda then pushed me out of my comfort zone to be that raw, but forced me to be brave and accept myself as valid.”

For the band, collaboration with producers has been key in turning rough song drafts into something finished and full. “In Your Mind” was produced and mixed by longtime collaborator Justin Meli and mastered by Will Yip, whose work with artists like Turnstile, Lauryn Hill and Panic! At The Disco had already inspired the group.

“We’ve been working with Justin since our first album, so our creative process feels pretty natural at this point,” Goyeau said. “When we bring him a song, it’s already pretty structured and he has a good sense of where to trim the fat and get the best out of what we’re trying to do. Working with Will Yip has been a goal of ours for a while, and after the last Turnstile album came out, we knew we had to make it happen.”

For Talking Violet, outside support has helped bring their songs to new ears. They’ve received attention from SiriusXM’s The Verge, landed on major Spotify and Apple Music playlists, and had a 14-week run on the NACC charts.

“We are so grateful whenever someone takes a moment to listen to our stuff,” Goyeau said. “NACC charts are cool too because independent stations always have the most lively, supportive communities. We are honored to have that genuine support.”

The band’s lyrics often draw from grief, change and uncertainty – subjects that can feel heavy but also widely relatable.

“I really like music that is overly specific to someone’s story,” Goyeau said. “So, I try to stay as honest as I am comfortable with. Grief and change are so fundamental to all of our lives, even though everyone’s experience is unique. It’s interesting that such different circumstances bring us to meet in the middle, though, with really core feelings. We all feel the growing pains of change.”

Beneath the glossy guitars and bright rhythm, “In Your Mind” holds an undercurrent of helplessness. Goyeau has described the track as her way of reckoning with the fact that loving someone through pain does not mean you can fix what they face.

“I’ve had to learn over time that no matter how much you want to help people, so often it’s really out of your hands,” she said. “They have to be the ones to figure things out, but you can do what you can from a supporting line.”

It is a sentiment many listeners may recognize: wanting to be remembered and understood even when distance, silence, or circumstance interrupts connection.

As for what comes next, Talking Violet is already working on more music.

“We have something coming sooner than later – the fall, actually. We are also in the studio writing right now!” Goyeau said.

The new single marks another step in the band’s journey, expanding their sound while staying rooted in vulnerability. What started as an urgent, almost immediate response to a moment of pain has become a polished track that both shimmers and aches.

Talking Violet’s ability to merge those two sides – bright, dreamy sound and deeply personal themes – has become the hallmark of their “dreamo” style. With “In Your Mind,” the band has created a song that carries grief, growth and hope in equal measure.
