The 1980s are back, but not in the way you might expect. For FETICO’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, designer Emi Funayama took inspiration from an era known for bold fashion, but instead of simply reviving the past, she reimagined it. 

“I wanted to explore the multifaceted and mysterious beauty of women,” Funayama said, referencing both the powerful icons of the ‘80s and the enigmatic allure of secretive figures in film. 

The result? A collection that brings body-conscious silhouettes, lingerie-inspired details and a dreamy, nostalgic vibe into the modern age.

The starting point of the collection was an encounter Funayama had with a pair of tapered pants and a bustier in a vintage shop in Paris. Captivated by the sophisticated yet rebellious energy of 1980s fashion, Funayama immersed herself in magazines and imagery from the decade. 

Supermodel Veronica Webb, who broke boundaries as the first African-American to be featured in a major cosmetics campaign, became a muse for the collection. Webb’s collaboration with Azzedine Alaïa, one of Funayama’s design heroes, particularly influenced the collection’s focus on strong, elegant femininity.

But the collection goes beyond fashion history. Funayama also drew inspiration from the 1988 film “Drowning by Numbers”, which depicts three generations of women who harbor dark secrets. 

“I’m fascinated by those who keep certain things hidden,” Funayama said. 

This intrigue found its way into the designs, blending the confident, body-conscious shapes of the ‘80s with a sense of mystery. Lace inserts, sheer fabrics and ethereal details evoke an air of secrecy, as if each piece tells a story waiting to be uncovered.

The collection’s balance of structure and softness is a reflection of Funayama’s deep admiration for craftsmanship. From tailored jackets to nostalgic rose-patterned slip dresses, every piece is meticulously constructed with a modern woman’s silhouette in mind. 

Using materials sourced from Japanese textile regions, including organic cotton and recycled rayon, Funayama maintains a strong commitment to sustainability while embracing the allure of timeless style.
