At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, Indonesian athletes captivated the world in stunning uniforms designed by Didit Hediprasetyo. These outfits masterfully blended modern fashion with traditional Indonesian designs, making a bold statement on the global stage.
The 40-year-old Indonesian designer has showcased his critically acclaimed collections at Paris Couture Fashion Week for the past 14 years. He is renowned for modernizing traditional couture techniques while honoring his Indonesian heritage.
Hediprasetyo’s designs were a celebration of Indonesia’s rich culture and history. Each piece reflected the nation’s vibrant heritage, helping athletes feel connected to their roots and proud to represent their country.
The uniforms drew inspiration from Raden Saleh, a renowned Javanese painter from the 19th century. His blend of Javanese and European styles was mirrored in Hediprasetyo’s designs, which mixed traditional elements with contemporary flair.
Saleh’s artworks, displayed in the prestigious Rijksmuseum and the Louvre, exemplified a harmonious blend of Javanese heritage and European romanticism. Hediprasetyo skillfully captures this fusion in his designs.
“I am deeply honored to design the official opening uniforms for our incredible athletes representing Indonesia at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris,” said Hediprasetyo who earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris.
“My goal was to create a design that embodies the pride, spirit and resilience of our nation while ensuring that our athletes look and feel their best as they compete on the world stage,” the Silver Thimble Awardee added.

The uniforms, made from high-quality, breathable fabrics like Indonesian denim, velvet and silk jerseys, were designed for both comfort and ease of movement, allowing athletes to perform their best.
The men’s outfits included biker-inspired denim jackets and crisp white trousers, blending athleticism with traditional Javanese style.
The women’s uniforms featured red Kebaya Kutubaru tops paired with white jumpsuit pants, combining sportiness with elegance.
Every detail of the uniforms, from the intricate stitching to the placement of the Indonesian emblem, showcased the country’s pride. The designs also included modern takes on traditional accessories like the Javanese turban.
Denim Blangkon and Blue Ultra Marine Velvet Beskap

The Blangkon, traditionally a Javanese headgear, is reimagined in denim. This modern twist on a classic accessory highlights the versatility and timelessness of the Blangkon. The denim fabric adds a casual, rugged edge, while the traditional shape and structure maintain its cultural significance. This fusion of materials exemplifies how traditional fashion can be adapted to contemporary styles.
The Beskap, a traditional Javanese jacket, is rendered in luxurious ultra marine velvet. The deep, rich blue color adds a sense of opulence and sophistication to the garment. The velvet fabric enhances the jacket’s regal appearance, while the traditional cut and design elements, such as the high collar and asymmetrical zipper, maintain its cultural authenticity. The red and white accent on the sleeve provides a striking contrast, adding visual interest and a touch of modernity to the ensemble.
The white trousers offer a clean and crisp contrast to the deep blue velvet jacket. Their tailored fit and sharp lines ensure that the overall look remains polished and elegant. The white color balances the intensity of the blue velvet, creating a harmonious and visually appealing outfit.
While the footwear is not clearly visible in the image, a pair of classic black or white shoes would complement the outfit, maintaining its formal and sophisticated tone.
This ensemble is a perfect example of how traditional Indonesian attire can be seamlessly integrated with contemporary fashion trends. The denim Blangkon and blue ultra marine velvet Beskap are innovative reinterpretations of classic pieces, showcasing the rich cultural heritage while embracing modern design elements. Paired with white trousers, this outfit is elegant, sophisticated and versatile, suitable for formal events and occasions that call for a refined, stylish appearance.
Red Velvet Kutubaru Jumpsuit

The outfit presented is a refined and elegant red velvet Kutubaru jumpsuit paired with white high-waisted trousers.
The Kutubaru, a traditional Indonesian blouse, is reinterpreted in luxurious red velvet. The choice of velvet fabric adds a rich texture and a touch of opulence to the outfit. The deep red color is both striking and elegant, making a bold fashion statement. The structured fit and the traditional neckline maintain the cultural essence of the Kutubaru, while the plush material and tailored design elevate it to modern high fashion.
The white high-waisted trousers provide a perfect contrast to the rich red velvet top. Their clean lines and tailored fit ensure that the overall look remains polished and sophisticated. The high waist accentuates the waistline, creating a flattering silhouette. The white color not only balances the intensity of the red but also adds a touch of modernity and freshness to the outfit.
The black loafers are a classic choice, grounding the outfit and adding a touch of formality. They complement the overall color scheme and ensure that the focus remains on the striking Kutubaru jumpsuit. The simplicity of the loafers allows the rich textures and colors of the ensemble to stand out.
The matching red velvet shawl, held in hand, adds an extra layer of sophistication and cohesion to the outfit. It serves as a versatile accessory that can be draped over the shoulders for added warmth and elegance or simply carried for a chic, effortless look.
The luxurious velvet fabric, rich red color and tailored fit create a look that is both timeless and modern. Paired with crisp white trousers and classic black loafers, this ensemble is perfect for formal occasions, showcasing a sophisticated and stylish interpretation of cultural attire.
Black Leather Blangkon and Denim Beskap Biker Jacket

The Blangkon, a traditional Javanese headgear, is typically made of batik fabric. However, this version is crafted from black leather, adding a bold, contemporary twist. The leather material exudes sophistication and modernity, while the traditional shape preserves its cultural essence. This juxtaposition of old and new makes the Blangkon a standout piece, bridging the gap between heritage and current fashion trends.
The Beskap jacket, traditionally a formal Javanese attire, has been reimagined in denim with a biker jacket silhouette. The indigo denim fabric brings a casual, rugged feel, while the classic Beskap structure, with its high collar and structured fit, maintains a formal elegance.
The asymmetrical zipper and red-white accent on the sleeve add a touch of edginess and visual interest, embodying the spirit of a biker jacket. This hybrid design effectively marries traditional Indonesian formalwear with Western casual aesthetics, making it versatile for various occasions.
The white trousers provide a stark contrast to the dark upper pieces, balancing the outfit and adding a touch of formality. Their clean lines and crisp fabric ensure that the look remains polished and sophisticated, allowing the jacket and Blangkon to take center stage. The choice of white also highlights the modern twist of the outfit, offering a refreshing break from more conventional color palettes.
The black loafers are a fitting choice, complementing the leather Blangkon and maintaining the outfit’s sleek, polished appearance. They provide a subtle nod to traditional footwear while ensuring comfort and modern style.
The black leather Blangkon and denim Beskap biker jacket are innovative reinterpretations of traditional Indonesian attire, while the white trousers and black loafers ground the look in modern sophistication. This outfit not only pays homage to its cultural roots but also pushes the boundaries of fashion, making it a striking and memorable choice for the fashion-forward individual.

As Indonesian athletes marched in the Paris 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony, they wore these beautiful uniforms with pride, symbolizing their heritage and dedication. The world watched as Indonesia made a stunning and memorable entrance, thanks to Hediprasetyo’s visionary designs.
